Top 50 tips for moving into a new home or apartment

Panama City Real Estate Moving TipsHaving moved many times over the course of my years as well as being a top producing real estate agent, I’ve gained some valuable tips and techniques that I pass on to my customers.

Here are my top 50 tips for moving into a new home or apartment:

  1. Create an outline for listing moving tasks including purchases you need to make
  2. Boxes – You can never have too many boxes. Plastic, cardboard whatever.
  3. Obtain plenty of packing material – newspaper, bubble wrap etc.
  4. Obtain plenty of tape for sealing boxes.
  5. Obtain marking tape such as blue painters tape to mark items not in boxes
  6. Get plenty of rope or twine for tying up boxes
  7. Use rope to tie up small stacks of books for easy moving
  8. Use towels inside boxes to cushion fragile items from impact
  9. label all boxes with contents and room in which it belongs
  10. Wrap furniture and appliances in movers wrap – it helps reduce impacts on furniture
  11. Buy extra light bulbs
  12. Keep a flash light handy
  13. Install new locks for the front, back and side doors.  You don’t know who has keys to the old locks.
  14. Hire a moving company well in advance (at least 2 months).
  15. If moving yourself, reserve the moving truck well in advance
  16. Get friends to confirm their help
  17. Friends with teenagers are a great resource.  Hire the teenagers to help with the move.
  18. Confirm your move with the moving company at least 3 weeks prior and then weekly until the day before the move.
  19. Always pack first in last out.  If you need, it should be on top.
  20. Pack boxes by room and label each box for each room
  21. Bubble wrap delicate and fragile items.  This includes art work!
  22. Move fragile and delicate items yourself prior to moving day if possible
  23. Pack comfort and hygiene items in a travel case and keep it with you
  24. Have paper plates, cups and plastic utensils available for dinner and lunch moving day
  25. Have important phones numbers with you and obtain them well in advance (water, elect, phone etc.)
  26. Contact phone company before the move and schedule installation close to move in date.
  27. Contact a real estate agent for all necessary phone numbers
  28. Obtain and fill out a change of address form from the post office
  29. Have cash and credit cards on hand for emergencies and purchases day of move
  30. Before moving day, place signs at entrance of rooms for movers to place marked boxes.
  31. Order dinner in – Pizza, burgers anything quick and easy to clean up.
  32. Have plenty of water/sports drinks available on moving day.
  33. Test everything in the new home moving day. Make sure everything still works.
  34. Put pets outside during moving day.
  35. Give pets time to adjust to the new home.  Let them smell and walk around freely.
  36. Put out the welcome mat
  37. Create a chores list.  If you’re upgrading you may have new chores that need to be addressed.
  38. To clean a lavatory bowl: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the bowl and… Let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
  39. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers – Fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.
  40. Paint before you move in if possible.  It’s easier to paint an empty home then one filled with furniture
  41. Meet the neighbors.  Introduce yourself and be friendly.
  42. Drive the neighborhood and acclimate yourself
  43. Contact the school where the children will attend and get their registration completed before the move
  44. Locate the school bus stop and show the children the safest route
  45. Unpack the children first if they can’t do it themselves.
  46. Try to move on a Saturday.  You get 1 extra day to get the new home in order.
  47. Avoid moving on holidays if possible.  Movers may not be available and there’s lots of traffic
  48. Check the sprinklers if you have them. Make sure they work and the timer is set properly.
  49. Homes with pools/spas – make sure you know how to operate all the equipment
  50. Call a local pool store and ask for assistance.  Most will help for free as they want your new business
